Interior Designer vs. Interior Decorator?
interior designers
Interior Designers focus on the functional, spatial and structural aspects of a space. They have a strong understanding of design principles, building codes and spatial relationships. With these skill sets they have the ability to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but functional as well. If you have a project that involves significant changes to the layout, structural modifications, or extensive renovations, hiring an interior designer is essential. They can help you conceptualize and execute the design ensuring the space is functional, safe and aesthetically appealing.
Interior design is a profession that requires specific education and formal training. Interior Designers often hold a four-year degree and may pursue an NCIDQ certification, which is the industry’s recognized indicator of proficiency of interior design principles. To receive this certification, it involves passing several lengthy exams, previous professional work experience and a degree. In certain states, having an NCIDQ certification is a legal requirement for practicing interior design and using the title “Interior Designer”.
interior decorators
On the other hand, Interior Decorators are more focused on enhancing the aesthetics and visual appeal of a space, including styling and decoration. They have a skilled eye for coordaining styling elements and can turn a blank canvas into a beautiful cohesive interior. They will typically coordinate the elements that are not physically fixed to the home such as artwork, accessories, window treatments etc. Because their focus is primarily on aesthetics, there is no formal training requirements. They do not plan or coordinate renovations and structural planning but instead will orchestrate the cosmetic elements of the space. They can be brought on after a renovation to add finishing touches.
